The Hospital

‘ Did you descend from heaven, or rise from the abyss.’ Charles Baudelaire.

Believe me if you wish. I was diagnosed with a fairly bad illness aged twenty four and taken to Manchester Royal infirmary. It was 1989 and I had not started treatment yet.

Anyway, it was a mixed ward. Men were near the entrance, the nurses sat in between us. We, the females were placed near the bathrooms at the back.

This particular night, the lady in the next bed started having an epileptic fit.

Most terrible for her but it also got to the pit of my stomach. More so for her, bless her. Terrible.

I couldn’t sleep, I wasn’t on medication yet, as just diagnosed. Anyway, after being wide awake and tossing and turning, I never saw anyone pass my bed, which was the only way to get to the bathrooms.

The light was on dim in that area and I suddenly noticed a man in pale blue pyjamas with a Hickman line holding and attached to a hospital stand.

As I looked at him, he disappeared in a flash.

Make do with this as you wish.
